Yahoo! News fired its Washington bureau chief David Chalian Wednesday after the reporter was caught saying Mitt Romney is “not concerned at all” about Hurricane Isaac.
“They’re happy to have a party with black people drowning,” Chalian said during an ABC/Yahoo News livestream of the Republican National Convention. Chalian seemed to think his microphone was off while making the comments.
A spokesperson for Yahoo News told Politico‘s Dylan Byers that Chalian’s statement “was inappropriate and does not represent the views of Yahoo!,” and that Chalian has been fired.
“He has been terminated effective immediately. We have already reached out to the Romney campaign, and we apologize to Mitt Romney, his staff, their supporters and anyone who was offended,” the statement continued.
As of 2 p.m., Chalian is still listed as Yahoo! News’s top political journalist. He formerly served as political director for ABC News and as political editor for PBS NewsHour before heading to Yahoo!.
